1. General

1.1. What is monicageller.com?

MonicaGeller.COM contains annotations of scripts from the NBC television show Friends. Annotations include nitpicks/bloopers (ie, plotline errors), observations, and even questions I have about the show that I'm hoping someone can answer.

1.2. What other URLs will get me here?

rossgeller.com, joeytribbiani.com, and monicabing.com also lead to monicageller.com.

1.3. What happened to the rossgeller.com site that featured DVD-enhanced scripts?

Warner Brothers asked me to remove complete scripts from my site, making it impossible to continue the rossgeller.com site. rossgeller.com now just leads to monicageller.com.

1.4. What is the format?

Each annotation is listed where it appears in an episode, with lines from other episodes quoted as necessary. If an annotation references multiple episodes, it is listed in each episode.

1.5. Did you add all of the annotations yourself?

To launch the site, I started with a reasonable number of annotations (about 225) which I found and wrote myself. However, I welcome submissions, so not all of the annotations on this site will be mine. I will try to credit people who submit annotations. Anything not marked with someone else's name (or marked "anonymous") is my own work.

1.6. Which shows have you annotated?

To launch the site, I attempted to briefly annotate all 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th season episodes (don't ask why these seasons specifically), as well as the first episodes of the 9th season. Because of cross-references, many other episodes are annotated as well. As time passes, I plan to annotate the 7th and 8th seasons followed by the 3rd and 4th seasons.

1.7. How heavily did you annotate the episodes?

For the site launch, I went over each episode lightly, only annotating major things that stuck out to me.

1.8. What sorts of things don't you annotate?

I annotate mostly off the scripts, so I normally don't annotate visual errors. I also don't annotate items that would require a lot of research, lines where it's clear a character is intentionally lying, very obscure references, obvious humor, and probably a lot of other things. I also sometimes break these rules and annotate something I wouldn't normally annotate.

1.9. Do you annotate errors in the transcribed scripts?

No. My goal is to annotate the show, not the transcribed scripts. However, I am aware there are errors in the transcribed scripts (misheard/misspelled/missing words/lines, incorrect speaker, combined or blank lines, etc), and occasionally the transcribers (who have put in a lot of work, I should emphasize) do go a bit overboard on parenthetically inserting their own thoughts/opinions.

1.10. Can I submit annotations?

Sure! But keep in mind that I haven't finished annotating all the episodes myself yet. So, if you submit an annotation I was going to add anyway, I won't be able to credit you for it. But, if you trust me, send it in. Or, if you prefer, wait until I've annotated all the episodes myself (I'll update the FAQ when that happens).

1.11. Will I get credit if I submit an annotation or answer a question?

Yes. I will credit you by listing your name, email address, and optionally website, unless you ask to remain anonymous.

1.12. Why annotate/nitpick only the aired episodes, not the DVD ones?

I started these nitpicks/annotations before the DVD versions came out. I may go back later and add DVD nitpicks/annotations as well.

1.13. Who runs monicageller.com?

I am Sarang, and my main site is sarangworld.com.

1.14. Did you transcribe all the episodes yourself?

No. Most of the work was done by various different people and originally posted to The Complete Friends Script Archive (CFSI), which is maintained by Eric Aasen, and was originally created by gunieapig. The CFSI site is currently down.

1.15. Does this site contain complete transcribed scripts?

No. An earlier version of this site did contain full scripts, but Warner Brothers asked me to remove them. This newer version contains only small portions of the scripts required for annotative purposes.

1.16. Did you get Warner Brothers permission to quote portions of Friends scripts?

No, but I believe my use of them here is a permitted use of copyrighted materials under the "fair use" provision of copyright law.

1.17. What is "www.friends-tv.org"?

www.friends-tv.org is an outstanding Friends site that includes several annotations (some of which I'd independantly come up with on my own), a comprehensive FAQ (including a list of which actors have played which roles, and a very thorough list of the songs and music featured on Friends), and many other impressive features. I've used material from this site to "fill in" some of my annotations for monicageller.com.

1.18. Are these the actual scripts?

No. These are only the scripts as heard by the people who transcribed them, NOT the original scripts as written.

1.19. Do these sites contain "spoilers"?

Yes. If you haven't watched all the episodes of Friends and don't want to know what happens in the episodes you haven't watched, these sites aren't for you. On monicageller.com, some annotations make references to future episodes, so even if you read an episode you've already seen, it may refer to a future episode you haven't seen.

1.20. Does this FAQ contain "spoilers"?

Yes. The remainder of this FAQ may contain spoilers, so, if you wish to remain spoiler-free, stop reading now.

2. Errata

2.1. Why is there no episode 213 (for example)?

Episode 213 is the 2nd part of an hour-long episode, and is transcribed as part of Episode 212. There are other similar cases.

2.2. Why do some lines start with "Chandler and", for example?

This is an error in the way my program parsed the original CFSI scripts-- if "Chandler and Monica" said something, my program shows that Monica said it and her first words are "Chandler and (rest of line)". I hope to fix this at some point.

2.3. How come the speaker names are sometimes given properly capitalized ("Chandler"), sometimes all capitalized ("CHANDLER"), sometimes abbreviated ("CHAN"), sometimes in boldface, etc?

For the most part, these are exactly as mirrored from the CFSI.

2.4. How come scene changes aren't always marked "SCENE" and actions aren't always marked "ACTION"?

The original scripts (on the CFSI) don't have "SCENE" or "ACTION" lines, but I tried to add them via a computer program. However, this didn't work perfectly.

2.5. I saw an error in your "mirrored scripts" that wasn't in the CFSI. Why?

Most of the mirror work was done using computer programs. While I did run some checks, certain mistakes got past me. So, there's no guarentee the scripts on my site are an accurate mirror of the CFSI. Of course, if you notice an error (except those in the above questions which I'm working on), please let me know.

2.6. If there are 3 annotatons for one episode, and 5 for another, is that a total of 8 annotations between the two episodes?

No. If an annotation cross-references two episodes, it's listed in both episodes, so there is some overlap.

2.7. If it says there are 5 annotations for an episode, are there really 5 annotations?

Not always. If an annotation references two disjoint parts of one episode, it's counted twice.

2.8. Why are the images fuzzy?

My video capture card/software isn't all that great. There are higher-quality methods to do the capture, but I'm lazy ("you in the back, you're doing it all wrong" -- "Yeah, but at least I'm doing it!").

2.9. Have the images been modified?

In some cases, yes. In addition to highlighting/circling/etc areas of interest, the images I captured directly from VCDs (video CDs, somewhat like DVDs but not identical) were too dark, so I applied a "normalization" to them. Other images may have been enhanced as well.

2.10. Why do some images appear twice?

I sometimes (rarely) find one image that annotates 2 or more things; in those cases, the same image may appear multiple times, with different captions.

2.11. Why do some annotations appear after line 1, when that's just the credits line?

I don't record where in an episode I do a video capture, so image-only annotations are placed after line 1.

3. Miscellaneous

3.1. Are the line numbers you use canonical?

No. I just needed a consistent way to reference lines, so I wrote a program that made up a line numbering scheme. Because of errors, some lines are blank, sometimes two lines are combined into one, some lines consistent solely of transcribers notes, etc. Since I only quote small portions of the scripts, the line numbers may seem a bit random.

4. Site Design

4.1. What's with the Day-Glo colors?

I wanted to give the site a distinctive look and separate out the navigation bar, header, footer, etc. The colors are also supposed to be vaguely similar to the colored dots separating the letters in the word "FRIENDS" in the opening titles of the show.

4.2. What color is the left-hand menubar? Pink?

It's faded salmon.

5. Philosophical

5.1. Why are you doing this?

It's a "labor of love" for my favorite show, a chance to use some cool domain names, and an opportunity to practice and enhance my programming skills.

5.2. "Practice and enhance my programming skills"? Are you looking for a job or something?

No, I'm (semi)gainfully employed.

5.3. Isn't this a waste of time?

Yes, but so is life.

5.4. Why not fix errors or make the sites more complete before launching them?

My philosophy is "If you're not going to do it wrong, don't bother doing it at all".

6. Weird

6.1. Monica, Phoebe, or Rachel?

Phoebe.

6.2. Monica/Chandler or Ross/Rachel?

Monica/Chandler.

6.3. How will it all end?

I have no advance knowledge, but... the show started when a group of 5 Friends became 6. Chandler probably got Monica pregnant (possibly in the same closet Ben was named?) and Monica's due date will be towards the end of the series. Monica and Chandler will then move to a house in the suburbs [or Tulsa?], at which point the group of Friends will diminish from 6 to 4, bringing full-circle closure to the show. Or, if the creators decide to marry off Ross and Rachel as well, Joey and Phoebe will probably split up as friends, effectively ending the series. Of course, there may be a spinoff...

6.4. What would you like to see that will never happen?

I'd like to see Ross and Phoebe get together. She stays very close to him the first season (usually for a reason, but still...), almost sleeps with him out of sympathy, and would never ask him to go "on a break". He bought her a dream bike (shades of the crystal duck scene), helped her learn to ride it, and even let her live w/ him briefly. I'm almost wondering if all the early 9th season niceness between these two will lead to something?

6.5. Which Friends character do you most resemble?

Ugly Naked Guy.

6.6. Annotate, annotate, annotate...

The word has lost all meaning.

7. Legal

7.1. Are you affiliated with the show?

No. Neither I nor this site is in any way affiliated with anyone involved in producing, distributing, broadcasting, etc the show.

7.2. How can you use this domain name?

I'm not a lawyer, but as nearly as I can tell (via a trademark search), the Friends character names are not trademarked. So, at least for now, I can use this domain name. It's intended as a tribute to my favorite show, and not to imply that I'm in any way affiliated with the show.

7.3. Can I copy your annotations?

The list of annotations is growing rapidly, so I would prefer you link to this site, instead of copy it. If you do want to copy it, please give me credit.
